The Trees Near me NSW App is a project of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment where existing and pre-cleared plant communities have been mapped, an amazing amount of information and a great way of recording our plant community types and the species that were, and still are, found in these plant communities.

The information in this App allows you to see what plants are growing in our native plant communities, such as State Forests, National Parks and areas of bushland that are still present in our communities throughout the State of NSW.

The App also has a function which shows what the plant communities looked like before areas were cleared, this gives you an insight into the types of plants that will thrive in any area you are interested in be it a large or a small area.

What will I find in this App?

Trees Near Me NSW app includes:

  • Learning more about the vegetation near you and anywhere else in NSW. The vegetation map shown in the app is the NSW State Vegetation Type Map. Check this out…NSW State Vegetation Type Map | NSW Environment and Heritage
  • Knowing which native Plant Community Types (PCT) and species are local to an area, you can read up on this at: NSW Plant Community Type classification | NSW Environment and Heritage
  • Choosing how much native vegetation information is provided by selecting a search area of 200 metres, 400 metres or 1000 metres. You can even hone in on individual species.
  • Selecting one or more plants from your plant community, follow the link to search for pictures and descriptions
  • Understanding what vegetation used to be found in cleared areas.

Why would you download this App?

Because it is a great resource and frankly, quite fascinating!  Seriously though, as a landscape contractor, consider these examples:

  • you could be working where the job you are doing may back onto or be close to existing bushland, you can find out the species, excellent way to impress your clients!
  • clients may want to recreate their own landscape with native flora from their area
  • you want to know the plant community type endemic to an area (even if it has been cleared) so that you have more information about the plants and soil type. This can assist with your amelioration of the soil after construction and with the selection of suitable plants be they native or exotic.
  • if you are interested in exploring and learning more about NSW native Plant Community Types and plant species in their local environment.
